You have probably met four or five of these methods without being told they were competing answers to the same question. Here they are side by side with who developed each one and how strong the evidence actually is — including the fact that no head-to-head trial exists for any of them.

What is a threshold, and why does it decide whether training works?

A threshold is the point where your dog stops being able to think — the distance a trigger has closed to, or the length of time alone that has passed. Under it, he can learn. Over it, he is not being stubborn; he is not available. Almost every failed attempt at this work is training that kept happening above the line.

What should you do first, before any training?

Management comes before protocols, always. It is not the training and it does not feel like progress, but every uncontrolled episode undoes conditioning you have already paid for in weeks, which is why plans that skip this stage stall.
  • Walk at low-traffic times and on low-traffic routes; avoid the dog park during the active training period.

    Cornell Riney Canine Health Center: "Walk your dog when others aren't out, and avoid the dog park." Stated goal is preventing the reactive behavior from becoming habitual during training. Reinforced by the general reinforcement-learning mechanism (VCA): "Dogs experience an innate reward for barking and lunging... behaviors that are rewarded will continue and often strengthen over time" — every un-managed rehearsal of the reactive display makes it more likely to recur.

  • Use parked cars, hedges, corners, or a street crossing to break line-of-sight to a trigger proactively, before the dog notices it — don't wait for a reaction to manage the encounter.

    General technique, cross-source consensus (shard 09 §2), not attributed to a single named authority: using visual barriers and route changes keeps the dog under threshold by controlling distance/visibility rather than reacting after the dog has already noticed the trigger (see shard 07 §3 for the underlying threshold-distance logic this serves).

  • Proactively advocate for the dog with strangers — tell people the dog is "working, shy, or in training" and decline greetings. The dog does not have to be friends with every person or dog.

    Cornell: "Protect them from strangers approaching. Tell visitors that your dog is 'working, shy or in training' to establish boundaries." And explicitly: "Your dog does not have to be friends with all people or every dog."

  • Never use aversive equipment or methods (prong/choke/e-collars, leash corrections, yelling, physical or psychological punishment) in reactivity training, including in response to growling.non-negotiable

    AVSAB, stated as an absolute: aversive methods "should not be used under any circumstances"; "only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems"; "there is no evidence that aversive methods are more effective than reward-based methods in any context."   • Add unstructured decompression walks (dog-led, off-leash or long-line, low-stimulation natural setting, no destination or heel command) alongside — never instead of — structured counter-conditioning training.

    Sarah Stremming: decompression walks let the dog engage natural behaviors (self-paced sniffing/exploration), which "promotes calmness and decompression," and "for reactive or fearful dogs the effects are life-changing." The same line of sources explicitly warns against using decompression walks as a substitute for training: "they work best alongside solid foundational training, especially for dogs with real reactivity... if your dog lunges at triggers... that's usually a sign the underlying behavior needs professional support, not just more enrichment." No named authority was found for a full "walk holiday" (stopping structured walks entirely) — see dis.walk_holidays; treat decompression walks, not walk cessation, as the sourced practice.

  • Avoid stacking multiple stressful events/triggers close together, and give the dog a calm-down period after a stressful event — but do NOT schedule around a fixed 72-hour "cortisol vacation."

    The directional logic (avoid piling stressors on top of each other; allow recovery time) is sound and behaviorally observable — trigger stacking reduces a dog's coping capacity and raises reaction likelihood. But the specific claim that cortisol takes 24-72 hours to clear is folklore (folk.cortisol_72h), debunked by its own former propagator, IAABC Foundation Journal (Luisa Depta): "I myself have advocated for and implemented such cortisol vacations in the past and quoted... 24-72 hours... I found I was unable to find any evidence that this information is based on scientific findings." Actual cortisol clearance is roughly 30-60 minutes (Depta, citing two references) to about an hour (Beerda et al., cited via a PMC/PLOS ONE review: cortisol "peaked approximately 15-30 minutes after the event before normalizing within 60 minutes"; estimated cortisol half-life ~66 minutes). Base recovery-time guidance on general HPA-axis/behavioral-carryover caution and observable recovery behavior, not on a specific hour count.

  • Support the dog's sleep and general downtime as part of arousal management — a well-rested dog has more coping capacity — but there is no sourced specific sleep protocol (hours, nap schedule, crate-rest cadence) for reactivity cases.

    Genuine research gap, flagged explicitly rather than filled with an invented number: shard 09 found "no dedicated, separately-sourced material on sleep specifically as arousal management... beyond the general HPA-recovery hedge in Depta's cortisol article." The directional logic follows the same HPA-axis recovery reasoning as react.mgmt.avoid-trigger-stacking-recovery-time — arousal/stress recovery takes some time even though the specific 72-hour cortisol figure is folklore — but no source gives a concrete sleep prescription. Do not present a specific hours/day or nap-schedule number to the buyer; state this as general good practice only.

What are the most common mistakes, and why do they backfire?

Each of these is something reasonable people do because somebody sensible-sounding told them to. The reason it backfires is the useful part.
  • Tighten or pull back on the leash when another dog/trigger approaches, especially in anticipation of a reaction — including tensing up before the dog has even reacted.

    "When a handler tightens the leash as another dog approaches, the dog feels that tension and interprets it as a signal: something is wrong, be ready." This creates a feedback loop, named explicitly: "The handler's anxiety transfers through the leash. The dog's arousal rises. The handler tightens more. The dog reacts." Pulling straight back specifically triggers the opposition reflex: "Dog pulls. Owner yanks the leash back. Dog pulls harder... When you pull directly backwards, you're going to get opposite resistance." The anticipatory version (tensing before the trigger is even close) starts this same loop earlier — the dog can react to the handler's tension itself rather than to the trigger.

  • Yell at the dog (or at the trigger) during a reactive episode.

    Not independently sourced with a dedicated citation this pass — follows directly from the AVSAB position statement, which lists shouting alongside other intimidation-based aversives (squirt bottles, shaker cans, compressed air, staring, forceful physical manipulation) that an appropriate trainer should avoid. AVSAB: "only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems," and aversive/intimidation methods carry "potential adverse effects... including but not limited to: inhibition of learning, increased fear-related and aggressive behaviors."

  • Correct, scold, or otherwise punish the dog for growling at a trigger.

    AVSAB (authoritative professional body): aversive/punishment methods "should not be used under any circumstances" and "there is no evidence that aversive methods are more effective than reward-based methods in any context"; potential adverse effects include "inhibition of learning, increased fear-related and aggressive behaviors, and injury." Growl-specific mechanism, direct application of the Ladder of Aggression (Kendal Shepherd; shard 07 §4): "If you punish a dog for growling, the dog may stop growling, but they will still feel uncomfortable or scared. Without the growl as a warning, the dog may skip straight to biting when they feel threatened."   • Let two leashed dogs approach and "say hi" head-on.

Both dogs are "trapped and unable to increase distance from each other, and tight leashes often communicate tension to the dogs, further increasing their stress."

  • Take a reactive dog to the dog park (or other high-traffic, unscreened dog areas), hoping exposure/socialization will help.

    Cornell explicitly instructs owners to "avoid the dog park" during the reactive-dog training period, to prevent the reactive behavior from becoming rehearsed/habitual. AVSAB's puppy socialization guidance reinforces avoiding dog parks / highly-trafficked areas with dogs of unknown vaccination/disease status (disease-risk framed in the original statement, but consistent with and reinforcing the behavioral avoid-dog-parks guidance).

  • Believe the dog just needs "more socialization" and deliberately immerse it in situations it finds overwhelming, hoping repeated exposure alone will fix the reactivity.

    Cornell, direct and unambiguous: "Immersing your dog in situations where they are not comfortable will increase their fear and may make their behavior worse." AVSAB explicitly names flooding alongside other prohibited techniques (pain-based tools, intimidation, physical correction) as something an appropriate trainer should avoid.

Weeks to months

How long does this take to fix?

Weeks to several months for real behavior change; 6-12 months for significant behavioral change; severe cases may need ongoing management for life. Every number here is dog-training-industry-blog consensus (Sniffspot et al.), NOT a peer-reviewed clinical timeline study — none was located despite an explicit search pass (shard 11).

What success actually means"'Cured' isn't realistic for many reactive dogs" — dogs with severe reactivity may always need some level of management, though quality of life can improve dramatically. A realistic goal is often neutrality ("going from a negative association to a neutral reaction is a huge accomplishment") rather than the dog becoming a dog-park dog. "Management isn't giving up — it's being realistic about your dog's needs while preventing unnecessary stress."

What nobody knows, including us

  • No peer-reviewed/clinical outcome-timeline study was located for reactivity treatment despite an explicit search pass — every week/month figure here traces to dog-training-industry blogs (Sniffspot, trainer sites) or one veterinary-hospital-association trends article (AAHA, only reached as a search snippet, direct fetch 403'd — not confirmed by direct fetch this pass).
  • No documented dropout/failure-rate data for reactivity treatment was found in this pass.
  • No source quantified how far back a specific regression-triggering event (illness, injury, move, seasonal change) sets a dog's progress.
  • No source gave a concrete post-success maintenance cadence (e.g. "X sessions/month indefinitely") — ongoing light maintenance is implied by the management-not-cure framing but not documented as a specific protocol.

Widely repeated, and wrong

Which popular advice should you ignore?

These claims circulate constantly. Each one is followed by what is actually true, so you can recognise the advice when you meet it again.
  • The '72-hour cortisol vacation': after a stressful event, it takes 24-72 hours (sometimes stated as 48-72h) for a dog's cortisol/stress hormones to return to baseline, so give several days of total quiet after any bad walk or trigger exposure.

    The IAABC Foundation Journal author (Luisa Depta) who had herself previously advocated 'cortisol vacations' using this exact figure went looking to cite the underlying research and 'was unable to find any evidence that this information is based on scientific findings.' She published a correction in her own professional journal, also flagging the related claim that 'chronically stressed dogs require four to six weeks to detox from stress' as equally unsupported.

    What is true insteadCortisol has been shown to leave a dog's system roughly 30-60 minutes following a stressor (peaking ~15-30 min post-event, normalizing within about 60 min per Beerda et al.'s data); estimated cortisol half-life is ~66 minutes — a timescale roughly 50-100x shorter than the popular claim. Slower-recovering systems (broader HPA-axis regulation, sleep, general arousal baseline, behavioral carryover) may genuinely take longer, which is a defensible, hedged reason to still give a dog a calm day after a bad outing — but that is a different claim from 'cortisol takes 3 days.'

  • Separation anxiety is caused by the dog being 'spoiled,' overly clingy, or hyperattached to the owner — too much affection, sleeping in the bed, being carried, and similar.

    Parthasarathy & Crowell-Davis (2006) ran a formal attachment test on 32 dogs with owner-reported SA vs. 43 without, followed by 30-minute videotaped alone-time, and found 'no significant difference in the type of proximity-seeking behaviors exhibited by dogs with and without separation anxiety' — dogs with SA 'spent no more time in contact with or proximity to their owners during the attachment test than dogs without separation anxiety.' The IAABC Foundation Journal literature review independently corroborates this, citing the same study: 'hyperattachment behaviors were no more likely in SA dogs when compared to a control group.'

    What is true insteadSA is not based on degree of attachment ('hyperattachment'/spoiling); the study authors suggest a different attachment STYLE, not degree, may be a factor. Blaming affection or bed-sharing for SA is unsupported and risks shaming owners for behaviors that aren't actually causal.

  • Tire your dog out with a big walk or run right before you leave and it will sleep through your absence instead of panicking — physically fit dogs supposedly have '20-30% lower anxiety rates.'

    No controlled study was located testing exercise as an intervention for diagnosed separation anxiety specifically. The '20-30% lower anxiety rates' figure could not be traced to any study in this research pass. SA is a panic/fear response to the owner's absence, not an excess-energy problem: 'the anxious dog is not behaving this way because they're bored or from lack of exercise, but because they're having a panic attack when they're left alone.'

    What is true insteadExercise is a plausible general-welfare practice, not shown to be sufficient treatment for SA on its own. No source in this corpus treats it as a fix.

  • Punish, scold, or correct a dog for growling at a person or another dog — 'nip the growling in the bud' before it 'becomes' aggression.

    AVSAB: 'Aversive methods... should not be used under any circumstances' and 'There is no evidence that aversive methods are more effective than reward-based methods in any context.' The growl-specific mechanism: 'If you punish a dog for growling, the dog may stop growling, but they will still feel uncomfortable or scared. Without the growl as a warning, the dog may skip straight to biting when they feel threatened.' ASPCA corroborates: 'The ASPCA is opposed to any training equipment that causes a pet to experience physical discomfort or undue anxiety.'

    What is true insteadA growl is a warning signal, not misbehavior to eliminate — it sits on Kendal Shepherd's Ladder of Aggression below snapping/biting. Suppressing the growl removes the warning, not the underlying stress, and raises bite risk. Management (increase distance, remove the dog from the situation) plus counter-conditioning to the trigger is the sourced alternative.

  • A reactive dog just needs more exposure/socialization — take it to the dog park, let it 'work it out' by meeting more dogs, and it will grow out of the reactivity.

    Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, direct: 'Immersing your dog in situations where they are not comfortable will increase their fear and may make their behavior worse,' and explicitly advises avoiding the dog park during the reactive-dog training period. AVSAB names flooding explicitly alongside pain- and intimidation-based tools as techniques an appropriate trainer should avoid. This is flooding — forced over-threshold exposure — not desensitization; the whole DS/CC and BAT literature depends on staying under threshold, which more exposure at a busy dog park guarantees will not happen.

    What is true insteadReactivity is treated by staying under threshold and building calm associations gradually (DS/CC, LAT, BAT 2.0, Engage-Disengage), not by more unstructured exposure. 'Your dog does not have to be friends with all people or every dog.'

Do not train through these

When should you see a vet or a behaviourist instead?

Training around an undiagnosed medical problem wastes months and can make the dog worse. These are the signals that mean the next appointment is a veterinary one.
  • SA-like signs (house-soiling, vocalizing, pacing, destruction when alone) alongside any indicator of a possible medical driver: recent onset with no clear trigger, GI or urinary signs, restlessness that could be pain, vague/nonspecific symptoms, or comorbid panic-type signs.

  • SA-like or aggressive behavior appearing suddenly, with no apparent trigger, in an adult or senior dog who tolerated being alone (or was otherwise stable) before.

  • Escape attempts causing injury (broken teeth/claws, injured paws), self-mutilation (chewing own tail), or excessive self-licking/chewing beyond ordinary destructive chewing.

  • Repeated or severe attempts to escape through windows, doors, or crates during owner absence.

  • Dog consistently refuses food, treats, or a food-toy offered at the start of an owner's departure.

  • A new or changed elimination pattern during absences (previously house-trained dog begins soiling, or the pattern of accidents changes) in the context of a suspected SA case.

  • New anxiety, disorientation (getting lost in familiar places, going to the wrong side of a door), altered sleep-wake cycle (daytime sleeping, nighttime pacing), house-soiling, or activity-level change in a senior dog — the DISHAA pattern.

  • Aggression when approached while lying down/resting, reluctance to move or exercise, or an owner describing the dog as "Jekyll and Hyde" with sudden unpredictable aggression bursts.

  • New house-soiling, appetite change, or lethargy alongside a behavior complaint.

  • House-soiling the owner describes as "behavioral," straining to urinate, or increased urination frequency.

Not coachable at a distance, by anyone

And these need somebody in the room with you

  • Owner reports a bite that punctured skin — Dunbar Level 3 or above (one or more punctures, any depth).
  • Any bite directed at a person, regardless of severity or context (provoked, guarding, fear-based).
  • A bite originally directed at another trigger (dog, stranger, object) lands on the owner/handler instead — redirected aggression.
  • Resource guarding (food, toys, rest spots, or people) with any bite history attached — most dangerous when children are in the household.
  • Aggression with a predatory pattern — silent stalking/chase/grab rather than the growl-snap-bite escalation typical of fear or conflict aggression.
  • Dog is under a legal/dangerous-dog order, or a bite has been reported to animal control, police, or the victim has threatened/taken legal action.

Is my dog reactive or aggressive?
Direction is the useful question, not volume. A fearful dog is trying to create distance — backing up, hiding behind you, barking while retreating. What is threshold distance and how do I find my dog's?
It is the distance at which your dog notices a trigger but can still take food, respond to you, and disengage. Every number in that range is industry consensus rather than a clinical study — no peer-reviewed treatment-timeline research was located, and no head-to-head trial exists for any of the named protocols.
Do I have to stop walking my dog?
